Description - 1963. With a few months left in his sentence, thirty-eight year old convict Randall Patrick McMurphy - "Mac" - serving time for several assaults and statutory rape, has just been transferred from a labor camp associated with Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton to a psychiatric hospital. Mac has been able to use acting "crazy" - having a belligerent and smart-alecky attitude and anti-authoritarian behavior - to his benefit in not having to do any work. He is at the hospital as the authorities at Pendleton want him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to prove he is not crazy, believing this is all an act to get out of work. He believes this stint will get him out of any more work while he serves out the remainder of his sentence. He is placed in a ward with a group of men who have differing degrees of lucidity and control of their mental faculties. He continues to behave in the same manner as always to get what he wants, using the other patients either as accessories or things for his own amusement. He adds to his list of goals to do anything to annoy the ward's tyrannical head nurse, Miss Mildred Ratched, whose seeming want is to break the spirit of any of the men in her care. In his battle with Nurse Ratched, Mac eventually tries to help the men get a voice of their own while in the hospital, and for some for their eventual return to the outside world

This asylum is an exceptional metaphor of contemporary society. It raises some very serious questions, such as the normalization of the disbalance of power, the political (mis)use of normality and mental illness, the role of repressive mental institutions in maintaining stability of the system, as well as question of obedience to authority and brutal methods that authority uses to preserves its hegemony.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest quickly gained status of a cult movie and became a must-see for all rebellious ones who felt resistance and the thirst for change, as well as the need to fundamentally re-examine the ideological basis of the world we live in. Its great all the way through, but the final 15 minutes are cinema gold. Those minutes can leave you stunned. Highly recommended for everyone who enjoys classy movies.

This was another movie I had heard a lot about but never I rented 10 PM. Big mistake because this is not the type of film you view before going to bed. An absolute riot one minute and painfully depressing the next- the movie deserves every praise it has received. From script to casting, it works on every level. Like always, Nicholson was fantastic. I have never watched an actor move so seamlessly through a range of emotions- sadness, joy, frustration, rage. My only wish is that Randall could have worked on Nurse Fletcher for one minute longer.
Some call this movie uplifting but I am just not there yet. The tragedies and triumph were nearly meshed-something you don't see very often. The symbolism can looked at from many angles but I took from it one premise: Self-pity and mundaneness are the enemies of salvation. Take a step out of it and the world is new.
